Alex Deane, the Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Finchley and Golders Green has taken a definitive stand against antisemitism by formally embracing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism.
This adoption marks a significant commitment, aligning Deane with a global movement dedicated to eradicating hatred, racism and discrimination against Jewish people.
The IHRA definition is recognised internationally and provides a comprehensive framework to identify antisemitism. By signing up to the definition, Alex joins a global community committed to combating racism, hatred and discrimination against Jewish people.
Commenting, Alex said:
“Antisemitism has no place in our society, and we must confront and eliminate it wherever and however it manifests. By adopting the definition, I am affirming my commitment to my prospective Jewish constituents, promising to stand against hatred and work towards a more inclusive and respectful society.
The alarming surge in antisemitic incidents since October 7 underscores the necessity of steadfastly upholding the definition.The endorsement of IHRA should not be controversial, nor a matter for debate. I urge my fellow candidates in Finchley and Golders Green, and indeed across the nation, to join me in this pledge, acknowledging that the battle against antisemitism transcends political boundaries and demands collective action.”
This pledge comes at a crucial time when reports of antisemitic incidents are on the rise in the UK and around the world. Data collected by the Community Security Trust (CST) from October 7 to December 31, 2023, reveals a significant and frightening trend; 4,103 instances of anti-Jewish hate were recorded during this period. The figure represents a staggering 66 per cent of the total incidents for the year 2023, surpassing any yearly totals of antisemitic incidents documented by CST.
